About the Author

Hi friends! Welcome to Mama Needs a Manual. I am so glad you stopped by.
I am Ashley. Wife to Bryan, Mama to Caleb, David and Ethan (yes, we are ABCDE). I am also a daughter of God, saved by His grace alone. I love coffee, crafting, baking, and curling up on the couch with a good book. Most days are spent chasing our kiddos around and being active whenever I get the chance. I am a professional problem-solver by trade.
A former Calculus teacher turned stay-at-home mom, this blog has become my new “classroom” where I share practical trouble-shooting advice, tips and encouragement. May this be a grace-filled space where you know you are not alone in the trenches!

Weight Watcher Tips from a Busy Mama of 3

    August 22, 2019 /

I’m not stranger to Weight Watchers (now rebranded WW). I first “joined” or I should say pseudo-joined in 2000 when I was 14 years old. That’s a whole other story for another day that led to a decade long battle with food. For the last several years, God has brought huge freedom in the area of self-image and bondage to food.…

Why I’m Going on a Social Media Fast

    March 6, 2019 /

I vividly remember the first time I laid eyes on an iPhone in the summer of 2008. I got my first one a few years later, in 2010, which means for almost a decade I’ve had this handy device almost always with me wherever I go. I am old enough to have experienced my college years pre-smart phone era (PSPE…can…

    If Only

    January 18, 2019 /

It happened again. Over the last few days I’ve been around a lot of other moms with young sweet babies…babies that sleep in public and don’t make a peep, babies that let their moms enjoy some adult conversation and participate in bible studies and help ease the transition from one to two or two to three children. No matter how…

    When I don’t feel thankful

    November 8, 2018 /

It’s November. It’s the time of year for thankful turkeys and thankful trees, practicing gratitude for the many things we have been given. But if I’m honest, sometimes I don’t feel thankful. And when we don’t feel thankful, what are we to do? We’ve all been there. We are having a “good” day and then there is a trigger, often…

Caleb’s 1 Year Old Very Hungry Caterpillar Birthday Party

    September 12, 2018 /

In just a week, our baby boy will be FOUR. I cannot believe it, really. I’ve been sentimental lately and thinking back to his first year. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that our 3rd (and maybe last) baby is quickly approaching his one year birthday. Or maybe, it’s just part of the bitter-sweetness of motherhood. Each…

Mama, Stop Trying to Carry All the Things

    May 3, 2018 /

His cherub face looks up at me, 5 stuffed animals in his arms,  “No, Mama! I do it myself!” This picture was snapped almost a year ago, but both of my boys still like to carry ALL the THINGS. We’ve tried reasoning (“Hey bud, you can’t hold all of those things. God gave us only two hands”). We’ve tried giving…

My First 6 weeks as a Mom (spoiler alert, it’s way HARDER than I thought!)

    April 19, 2018 /

**Note*** This was originally written and published on my blog dancinthroughtheminefields.blogspot.com in October of 2013, and you can read the full post here Thoughts on motherhood so far: It is hard. Way, way harder than I imagined. I read an article the other day that defined happiness as reality-expecations. I expected motherhood to be difficult. Everyone says it is, but…

    E’s Birth Story 12.18.17

    March 22, 2018 /

Here we are 3 months in, and I am finally making time to write down Ethan’s birth story, but #thirdchildproblems, right? For those of you who have known me for a while, you know my history with long/difficult labors- (read Caleb’s story here and David’s here) and that I had high hopes of being able to have a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After…

9.19.14: The Day Caleb Paul Made His Arrival!

    March 22, 2018 /

(**Originally published Oct 2014, on dancingthroughtheminefields.blogspot.com) I sit here with a precious baby sleeping on my chest. I still cannot really believe he is ours- our son, a little bit of Bryan and me and generations past and perfect for us, such a gift from God. I’ve only been a Mom for 3 weeks, and they have been 3 very…
